Camel from Kyzylkum

Camel From Kyzylkum by Lara Gelya

I was born in Ukraine but worked and lived in the Kyzylkum Desert for two decades — a vast stretch of red sand across Uzbekistan that, for most people, might as well be another world. To me, it was more than a desert. It was a landscape of secrets — and a place where silence spoke louder than words.

Growing up under the tightening grip of the Soviet Union, I learned early how to carry my dreams quietly, tucked deep inside my heart where no one could reach them. To speak too much was dangerous. To hope too much was foolish. But even then, somewhere in the dry winds of Kyzylkum, I felt the pull of freedom — a whisper that there must be a world beyond these borders.

Years later, when the chance came to escape, I left behind not just my homeland, but a piece of myself. I crossed continents with nothing but a suitcase of memories and a fierce belief that life could be better — that I could be more.

This is my story — of exile, resilience, and the quiet courage it takes to walk away from everything you know to find the life you dream of.

It is about what it means to be erased by a system, to live without a country, to forge a new life in an unfamiliar land, to endure betrayal by family, and to keep moving forward anyway.

Based on a true story, Camel from Kyzylkum is a gripping, cinematic journey of loss, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of a future.

The “camel” of the title becomes a powerful symbol: a creature built for endurance, carrying its sustenance within, much like the author herself.

I believe the visual nature of my book makes it a strong candidate for film adaptation.

A Story Told is a Life Lived

“There were seasons of Light, and seasons of Darkness. Bits and pieces of my life that raced through my mind transformed into words that have been etched on paper—they represent a significant investment of time, mental energy, and emotions.

Everyone has his/her own story. This is my story. It is not perfect, but that’s okay. I hope it helps everyone who reads it to learn to never give up their dreams, to live life in wonderful ways, to love, and to hope.”
